The service commemorates the last meal Jesus had with his disciples and there are several emphases within this evening. First, the theme of love and service is demonstrated by Jesus washing his disciples’ feet. It is this action which is thought to give us the word ‘Maundy’ from the traditional Latin, ‘Mandatum novum do vobis’ – ‘A new commandment I give to you’ (John 13:34). Second, there is the theme of redemption in the institution of the Lord’s Supper.
