Shane Claiborne is an activist and author who is a leading figure in the New Monasticism movement and one of the founding members of the intentional community The Simple Way in Philadelphia USA. Shane is also a social activist, advocating for non violence and service to the poor. He is the author of many books including the most recent re-edit 10 year anniversary edition of The Irresistible Revolution: Living as Ordinary Radical. www.redletterchristians.org
Tom Read is a singer-songwriter who grew up in the fast-paced city of Hong Kong, and now resides in Oxford, UK. The eclectic and international flavours of his upbringing are evident in his music, resulting in a unique, yet accessible sound that you can’t quite put your finger on.
A big believer in songs of substance, Tom weaves elements of love, pain, faith, and honesty into his music, perhaps best described as “indie-pop songs that tell stories”.
No stranger to the live stage, Tom has performed across Asia and Europe and loves every opportunity he has to share his life and music. www.tomreadmusic.com
Oliver Pengilley is a professional artist who has become widely known through his inspired paintings. Oliver’s combination of artistic excellence and spiritual sensitivity enables him to capture and convey images that bring comfort and envisioning to many. Oliver has painted in many parts of the USA, Canada and Europe, painting during live music sessions, one-on-one training and running workshops. www.oliverpengilley.co.uk
Some of the Themes Shane will be covering include:
The Irresistible Revolution
Shane shares stories from his book and personal journey – like growing up in the Bible belt, calling up Mother Teresa on the phone and working with her in Calcutta, getting arrested in Love Park for feeding the homeless, traveling to Iraq during the bombing. Using biographical stories to animate biblical truths. Bringing that home and calling us all to join God’s revolution where we are.
Tearing Down the Walls
From picket fences and gated neighborhoods to office cubicles and prison cells, we live in a world of walls. We can end up lonely people… stuck in the ghettoes of poverty and the ghettoes of affluence. But God is all about tearing down walls. We are not alone. Stories of compassion and reconciliation invite us into the promise that the gates will not prevail. Poverty and injustice become personal, as we gain the eyes to see the suffering around us. The Gospel comforts the afflicted and afflicts the comfortable… but is good news to all of us. Scriptures may include: Luke 16: 19-26 (the parable of the rich man and Lazarus).
